October 15, 2014 Quilt Meeting

Our Meeting at Helen Hosmer's house was a real treat.  We learned about "Borders" from Sue Tannyhill and had a delicious lunch.  Thanks to all who helped out.

  A few tips from Sue...
1.  It is most important to measure correctly.  Measure down the midddle of your top and off center of each side by 12 inches, because they could already be stretched.
2.  Be accurate.

Baklava Recipe from Helen Hosmer ...delicious

1 box phyllo pastry defrosted
1 1/2 c butter melted
1 bag chopped walnuts
1/3 c sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Mix cinnamon nutmeg and sugar.  Melt butter in saucepan. Use 13 x 9 baking pan.  Butter pan using pastry brush.  Lay down 2 sheets of phyllo.  Butter.  Repeat 5 times (10 sheets of phyllo.  Ok to piece as needed.  May want to place moist paper towel over unused phyllo while working if it is drying out.). Sprinkle with 1/3 cinnamon sugar and 1/3 walnuts.

Lay down 2 sheets of phyllo, butter, repeat.  Repeat sugar and walnuts.  Repeat.

Finish with 2 sheets phyllo buttered, 2 more, buttered, and one or two sheets DO NOT butter.  Cut in diamonds using sharp knife.

Pour remaining butter over top of precut dough.  Bake 300 deg. For 45 minutes.

Make syrup.

Boil for five minutes 2 cups sugar with 2 cups water.  Add 2 Tbs honey.  4 drops cinnamon oil ( doTerra) and 5 drops lemon oil ( doTerra).  Pour over cooked pastry and return to oven for 10-20 minutes.

I have a convection oven it works fast and hot.  You may want to use 350 for an hour.
I used essential oils in the syrup from doTerra.  Extract from the grocery would be fine.  Google more recipes and create your own or goto cooks.com
